Project Four: Decadence
Within this project, I explored three decades of interior decorating trends. I explored the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and what they brought to the design industry. Looking into factors like material, color, and overall aesthetics, I learned a good bit about each decade of style and used the idea to synthesize my own project of putting the 3 together. I did end up getting more specifically into home entertainment and technology at one point of my project, which helped me to understand lifestyles and how they may have influenced design choices.
What I created:
In art, I combined my gathered knowledge to create a model living room that mashed together every decade. I then used this product to create a home magazine inspired by those of the 70s-90s, which I titled 'Decadence'. For my English piece, I narrowed down my topic of study and focused on the VCR. I knew home entertainment centers were an iconic piece during their time, so I wanted to learn why they were so common. I looked into where the VCR got its start and what happened to it throughout the decades I was focused on. I incorporated this information into my magazine. Finally, for history, I used my model living room and picked apart specific pieces and wrote small paragraphs to describe what I put into the room and why. This also went in as an article in my magazine.
Synthesis in my project:
Synthesis is evident everywhere in my project. I knew I was heavily inspired by styles of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, so I wanted to fuse them together to create my own unique product. I gathered all the information I could on the trends and styles of these decades and used individual, stand-out pieces to fill a room of my own. Each part of the room holds a significance to its era and I am proud of the result. The best part of this synthesis project was the challenge of finding ways to blend the styles together to create one fluid room.
