Project Three: Inside
In my third project of the year, I wanted to focus on a movie that effected me, Bo Burnham: Inside. This comedy special includes a compilation of songs, monologues, and scenes that show Bo Burnham's quarantine experience. I wanted to research why he sang some of the songs and what they meant. When I first watched the special, I knew there were some complex stories behind his lyrics, this intrigued me so I wanted to dive deeper.
What I created
To develop reasoning behind the film, I researched Bo's mental health to see if he had any diagnosed illnesses and if that contributed to his songs and lyrics. A lot of the songs in the special seemed to cover the topic of mental health so it made sense to me that he may have personal experiences. Through further research I figured out he had been diagnosed with anxiety and depression. I also researched the film itself to find it was a documentation of Bo's quarantine experience. This background information gave me a well rounded perspective when watching and analyzing the film. As I watched the movie, I highlighted scenes that stood out to me, I then included the scene's context in the film and then why it stood out to me. I did this throughout the whole movie for the English portion of my project. For art, I picked one of the most popular songs to come out of the movie, 'That Funny Feeling'. This song is about a feeling of dissociation, where Bo lists things in the modern world that cause this feeling. I rewrote the song to apply to me and some of the things that get me down and demotivate me and then annotated and performed the song. Finally, for social studies I created a blog on the topic of self-sabotage. This is because there is a common theme in the film of Bo getting down on ihmself and procrastinating the project because he either didn't have the motivation, or he didn't want to run out of things to keep his mind occupied. I applied this to myself and my own experiences with self-sabotage to create my blog about what it is, why it happens and how to stop it.
Reasoning in my Project
Reasoning can be found in each element of my project. In art, I included reasoning in my song rewrite by annotating the lyrics and explaining why I wrote the lyrics that I did. For the analysis of the film, I included the reasoning why each scene that I highlighted was important to me. I wrote in the reasoning why different parts of the film were meaningful to me. Finally, in my social studies blog post, I showed reasoning through my research and report on why we self-sabotage, which ultimately helped me to understand how to stop it and how to help yourself out.
